Evaporative coolers are a fantastic and eco friendly solution to combat dry heat, they where also used by the ancient Egyptians and Persians over 5000 years ago from complex wind-catcher structures or by simply placing porous containers full of water on the window sill to evaporate in the breeze.
Evaporative coolers work by bringing hot dry air through a wet medium (example: pads of the cooler) when that hot air passes through the wet pad the energy in the air transforms water from a liquid to a gas using the heat energy in the air to do so, it is them sent through your house replacing the warmer air inside with the cooler air and constantly pushing the air back outside in a repetitive cycle.
We often come across customers that do not like evaporative coolers, when we investigate why they don’t like it the top 2 responses are usually because they don’t think it cools the house and that it makes everything wet inside the house.
9 times out of 10 this is because no one has shown them how to use the system properly , they assume that like a gas ducted heater you turn on the thermostat and shut all the doors and windows to outside which is a reasonable thought if no one has explained to you how it works.
When nothing is open to outside the humidy keeps increasing inside with no where to go until it reaches its dew point and hey presto transforms back into a liquid. The second most common problem as to why they don’t work is usually an undersized system , the air in your house needs to be replaced in litres per minute and unfortunately if a system has been installed that cant replace the required volume of air per minute then it will never be able to cool the house properly and give poor old evaporative coolers a bad name .
